New ProPublica investigation into Exeter Finance

Main Post:

Byard Duncan here, a reporter at the nonprofit investigative newsroom ProPublica. I and my co-reporter Ryan Gabrielson spent a year investigating Exeter Finance, one of the largest subprime auto lenders in the U.S.

Our story is out today. I’m sharing here (with the blessing of the mods) because I thought members of this community might be interested. https://propub.li/4gphD7E

My team and I also built a free calculator tool that helps consumers understand the hidden cost of deferring car loan payments. Check that out here: https://propub.li/47mt8bW

If you have an experience/expertise you’d like to share, please feel free to do so using the form at the bottom of our story. We read everything that comes in.

So are we saying subprime banks are bad and credit criminals don't deserve an opportunity?

Or that people with bad credit make bad decisions, leading them to banks that take higher risks and want to limit their liability?

The fact that you think Exeter partnered up with CarMax shows the level of research that went into your article.

This looked harsh at the time and still looks harsh. Hits the shoulder first and rides up, should have mitigated to yellow.

These calls are becoming a bit of a lottery again, depending on whether the TMO or ref sees mitigation or not.

I need help with travelling options from London to Exeter.

Main Post:

Hello, I don't know if this is relevant to this sub, however, if not please accept my apologies and skip.

We (I and my husband) are moving to Exeter from an another country. Since we are moving with our cats, the only option for the entry is London for us.

The options I found so far are,

  1. Trains: As far as I know, this is the fastest and the most comfortable way to travel. However, I think, it might be difficult with that much luggage and cat boxes. Also we will need to change trains as well.
  2. Coach: I read that they are not accepting pets. So they are out of option.
  3. Car rental: This is the most expensive option because it will be one way. Also, we are not new drivers but I don't know if it is a good idea to drive that long as it will be our first experience of driving at left handed traffic.

Any idea or recommendations will be appreciated .

Thank you.

If you've got a load of luggage, stressed cats, etc, then definitely hire a car. It probably won't be that much more expensive than the train TBH, and if you're flying in to Heathrow it's a fairly easy drive to Exeter and about the same time as the train (~ 3 hours). Moving is expensive, but at least you hopefully don't have to do it too often.

Degree in magic to be offered at University of Exeter

Oooh look, it’s a ‘niche degree exists!’ story.

It’s an MA in a specific area because people like learning about cool shit. It’s totally normal to specialise in something in academia; this is just someone going into more depth on a topic that could have been in their History or English Lit undergrad.

If someone doesn’t see the value in studying humanities at all then that’s a separate debate. But all the tutting at these articles is boring.
